Paul Boutin of Slate tells a story of a web site with only one page displaying a total of 6 words that reads, "Are you tired? Tell us why." The word "us" is an email link to the owner. Without advertising, the site has managed to receive over 32,000 emails answering the question from random people since 1997. Mike Kuniavsky, the owner of Tired.com, is a user-experience consultant for the designers of Web sites and gadgets. Kuniavsky theorizes, "People trust simply designed sites. Tired.com's plain-text, unadorned format seems soothing and trustworthy, particularly when compared to the garish, on-the-make look of most sites. A few visitors mistake it for a professional sleep-deprivation study and dutifully list their symptoms, perhaps in hopes of joining a clinical trial."
Mike does not publish these web sites. He does share some of the messages with his personal friends.
