Grocery stores in San Francisco may soon tell its customers to B.Y.O.B. as in "bring your own bags". The city's Commission on the Environment asked the mayor and the board of supervisors to consider a 17-cent per bag charge on paper and plastic grocery bags. According to this report by ROBERT HALEY from the Department of the Environment, each grocery bag costs the city of San Francisco around $0.17 to collect, dispose, and recycle.
I do not know why the Department of Environment wants to even offer the plastic bags for sale . The department needs to learn from Sam's Club and Costco. The two giant warehouse discounters do not distribute plastic or paper bags for free or for a fee. The customers of Sam's Club and Costco recycle the leftover boxes that were used to ship the products to the stores as their "grocery bags". Just a thought. Be friendly to the environment. Don't use the environment as an excuse to tax environmental friendly citizens.
