Sony announced that it will stop selling its PalmOS based PDAs, Clie handhelds, in the U.S. The company says that the declining sales in the PDA market will most likely continue as more PDA consumers make the move to SmartPhones.
Sony's exit from the U.S. PDA market is a bit surprising. The company spokesperson says "Sony is taking this time to examine the conventional PDA business and how it will transition into the future."
Personally, I think the company should keep its Clie presence in the U.S. and evolve its Clie handhelds into the next generation mobile devices with wireless communication capabilities in both data and voice. Perhaps Sony's Sony Ericsson division is a better fit to take on the next generation PDAs. Will we see Clie type products in the future under the Sony Ericsson brand? Actually, this move by Sony kinda makes sense with its new Playstation portable gaming/multimedia device debuting early next year. Perhaps the new PSP is the next generation Clie?
