Naive Macs

The CIO reports, "Apple claims that Mac OS X is designed to be Internet-safe, out of the box, without requiring firewalls or additional security precautions or software." Wow, that is a bold claim by Apple. And the company is planning to back that up with a new commercial, view here. It seems that Apple is the only one on the planet claiming its invincibility to attacks by hackers and viruses.

MSNBC writes, "Apple’s most recent wake-up call came last week, as a Southern California researcher reported seven new vulnerabilities. Tom Ferris said malicious Web sites can exploit the holes without a user’s knowledge, potentially allowing a criminal to execute code remotely and gain access to passwords and other sensitive information."

Macworld reports, "A sharp increase in the number of flaws being discovered in Mac OS X suggests that the Apple operating system may soon be every bit as prone to malicious attacks as Windows systems, according to a report from the SANS Institute, a Bethesda, Md.-based security training and research firm."

Apple has long been ignored by hackers because of its small 5% market share. Hackers did not think it was worth their precious time to attack Mac OS systems due to the lack of return on investment so to speak. Without security and an increase in popularity, Macs are becoming hackers' favorite new targets.

Apple needs to stop being all high and mighty. Apple needs to stop being naive. The company should be happy that hackers have finally took notice just like a celebrity's fame can be gauged by the amount of annoyances from the paparazzi. Without security measures, Macs will be sitting ducks. Don't be snooty macs, just be prepared. When the hackers attack, no OS is invincible. We can only do our best to prevent and remove.
