BBC News reports, "Internet service provider UK Online has become the first to offer super-fast broadband across the UK. ADSL2+ technology promises speeds of up to 22Mbps (megabits per second)..." Wow, that is fast! I wonder how long it will take to reach "Ludicrous Speed" (Spaceballs). However, most UK Online subscribers will not be able to reach the maximum speed of 22 - 24Mbps unless they meet all the optimum conditions such as perfect phone line and within meters of the nearest telephone exchange. UK Online company spokeswoman said, "If they live two kilometers or closer (of a telephone exchange) they should be able to get higher speeds than 8Mbps."
Right now, my DSL Internet connection is around 3Mbps. My old cable connection saw speeds of 4 - 5Mbps, and that was fast. For now, I am not sure who needs to have more than 5Mbps unless you are downloading gigs of data. Having 3Mbps download speed is more than sufficient to cover my gaming, browsing, and downloading needs. I personally would prefer having higher upload speeds. My upload speed stands at 700+Kbps which is very slow when I have to push huge files to my web host. Also, most of the downloads are crippled by the slower upload speeds especially in P2P situations.
Companies should offer faster upload speeds first to match download speeds. My suggestion and wish? Ludicrous broadband speed for both uploading and downloading. Can you imagine never having to wait for a file to download? But I guess in the end, we will always have to wait for files to download. As our Internet connection gets faster, our files are also getting bigger.
