My friend and I took a ride on Sullivan Fire Road in Topanga State Park. I rode my new bike which is equipped with road tires. The tires did fine on the climb. However, on our way down, my rear tire could not hold up and went flat. Luckily, my friend is a hardcore biker who carries the essentials to fix a flat. He took out his tools and kits and fixed my flat in no time. Phew. If he were not there, I would have ended up walking my bike to the shop which was at least 5 - 6 miles away.
Although I decided to get a road bike with a flat bar for most of my street riding, I do like to hit the fire roads once in a while. I guess I could ride my mountain bike, but the route I take for casual fire road riding is on 80% pavement. I definitely like to ride my new bike unless I am hitting the single tracks. My friend recommended getting tires that will be more suitable for both street and fire road riding. I took my bike to the shop for some adjustments after the break-in, and I am going to be putting a pair of new tires on them. I cannot wait to try out the new tires on Sullivan Fire Road. And I also bought some gear to fix a flat and an extra inner tube just in case I get another flat in the future.
