iPaq GPS

Trendy recently purchased iGuidance and Holuz GPSlim236 Wireless GPS Receiver to turn her iPaq into a portable GPS device. We tested the add-on GPS software and hardware yesterday driving around locally. I am very impressed!

The Holuz GPSlim236 connects to the PDA via Bluetooth which eliminates attaching a bulky and ugly unit onto the PDA itself or running a wire that gets in the way. Despite its small size, the Holuz GPSlim236 is very powerful. Unlike my XM or other GPS units, Holuz GPSlim236 does not have to see the sky to communicate with GPS satellites. More importantly, it is very accurate.

iGuidance is the GPS software that we installed on the PDA. As expected, the maps take up a huge chunk of storage space on the SD memory card. iGuidance is user friendly. In no time, we got the software to start telling us where to turn and how far to go before reaching our destination. The maps look similar to car navigation units with multiple zoom levels and amazing detail. The turn-by-turn directions are accurate with voice warnings that provide plenty of time and distance to get ready before the next turn.

If you already have an iPaq, you should definitely look into turning your PDA into one of the best portable GPS devices. You can take it anywhere or use it in any car. The application for this portable GPS device is endless. The cost of adding the extra software and hardware, given that you already own an iPaq, is significantly lower than purchasing a stand alone GPS unit. Special thanks to David and Jacqueline from San Francisco for research and recommendations.
