My old router was having some problems directing traffic within my home network. It would work about 75% of the time, but I had to reset it often to get the network back up and running again. One of the more annoying problems was trying to maintain a solid connection between XBox 360 and the PC to view photos or to listen to music via the TV connected to the game console. And the problem was in the wireless connectivity because wired connections worked fine for print and file sharing. Since I could not seem to resolve the problem, I knew we had to replace it with a new router.

For my birthday, Trendy bought me a new D-Link DGL-4300 router. It is dubbed as a "Gaming Router" because it "automatically prioritizes network traffic to better execute bandwidth-sensitive applications including VoIP and multimedia applications" according to the product description. DGL-4300 has four ethernet ports plus one WAN port like most of the routers on the market today. The wireless bandwidth is up to 54Mbps for most or up to 108Mbps for terminals connected using D-Link's special network adapters.

Setting up the router and getting the network up and running was much easier than the ones I have set up previously. D-Link has done a good job with the new firmware to make security configuration and firmware update much easier than before. I also like the new ability to force MAC filtering for wireless connections while keeping wired connections MAC filter free. This allows quick access to the network via a wired connection when necessary while keeping my wireless network more secured by utilizing WPA and MAC filters. DGL-4300 also comes with a built-in firewall which seems to be working well without causing routing issues within the LAN. Overall, I am very very pleased with this new router. D-Link has made a ton of improvements since my old router.
