It's been a long time since I played PC games on a desktop. After setting up the system and transferring data from my laptop to my new computer, I decided to install some of the old PC games I have. After installing a couple of my games, I found out that many of my games were not compatible with my widescreen monitor which as a screen resolution of 1360 by 768 pixels. My games look distorted, stretched, or blurred. None of them supported my 1360 width screen. I tried reinstalling, searching manuals for clues, and changing display settings. Nothing worked. It was frustrating. Just when I was about to give up, I found a great site with tips and guides on tweaking game configuration files to fit on widescreen displays. It is called Widescreen Gaming Forum.
I learned that many games' configuration files with extensions such as .ini or .cfg can be tweaked using a basic text editor like notepad. All it takes is changing a line or two in the config file to make a game fit perfectly on the widescreen display. Many games such as Neverwinter Nights actually supports wider screens by utilizing the extra real estate on the sides. Check out the screenshot differences between standard and widescreen formats for various games here.
Widescreen Gaming Forum also provides utilities you may download that will tweak the configuration files of supported games to fit your widescreen with just a few clicks.
