My friends and I can recall one of the scariest and creepiest games we have ever played was Amber on a Apple Macintosh in the mid-90s. The game was probably available only for Macs. I don't remember. I tried doing a search on the Internet to find some info on Amber to post here; I found none. You can still find a few copies here and there on EBay though.
One night, my friend and I were playing Amber in complete darkness, an element in the game jumped out of no where and made him jump out of his chair and me screamed out loud. We were both in our late teens, grown men! No game since Amber has yet to make me feel as eerie.
Wired Magazine just did a nice write-up about the up and coming horror titles releasing on consoles. These games as Wired called "Things That Go Bump in a Console" include the following:
Siren
Kuon
Echo Night: Beyond
Silent Hill 4: The Room
Call of Cthulhu
Resident Evil 4
Both Silent Hill and Resident Evil series are games that will suck you into their environments. Scary? Not really. Well, Silent Hill comes pretty close to Amber but it is more disturbing rather than scary. Hopefully, one these new releases will truly scare the heck outta me just as Amber once did.
