What is wrong with the music in games these days? More and more developers choose stupid sound tracks from the music industry as the background music of a great game. Well, I hate the music in most games. I find myself automatically selecting options and muting the music every time I pop in a new game. Great games such as Madden and Need For Speed have all sold out to the music industry. One of the few games that actually has awesome original sound track in recent years is Halo 2. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time also has noteworthy original sound track that deserves mentioning.
We want more original sound tracks to enhance our gaming experience. We do not want loud and annoying songs blasting in the background. If we wanted to hear Snoop or Blink 182, we will tune to MTV or turn on the radio. Well, with that said, EA has just announced their list of bands that will be featured in the new Madden 2006. It looks like I will be jumping straight to the options menu again to mute the music as soon as Madden boots up.
Sadly, the trend seems to suggest that we will get less original sound track made for games and more plugs from the music industry according to this article. Soon, all video games will be filled with ads in addition to music promotions just as we saw in Need For Speed: Underground. I would not mind the extra ads if they would give us the games for free. If corporate america wants to use video games as a new marketing channel, corporate america should also pay for the development of gaming. However, while we are dishing out $50 for each of these games, I do not want to be bombarded with ads. I am paying $50 for the game, not to watch and listen to demos and promos.
